SUMMARY:Three Ghosts of Silvertown
DESCRIPTION:Three Ghosts of Silvertown\, the seventh Newham Play\, is the boldest production in the series to date\, and it’s performed at Tate Institute\, the historic community building whose remarkable restoration inspired writer James Kenworth. \nThree working-class ghosts\, resurrected from the poverty and hardship of early twentieth-century Silvertown\, return to confront the inequalities of both the past and present. Determined to rewrite history\, they re-stage the famous 1889 Silvertown Strike led by Eleanor Marx. \nBut this time\, the ending is their own. \nBlending spoken word\, movement and a pulsating techno and house soundtrack\, the production fuses history with contemporary theatre in a powerful site-responsive performance. Created with a professional creative team alongside young people from Newham\, it continues the Newham Plays’ commitment to telling local stories through ambitious\, community-led theatre. \nInspired by the remarkable restoration of the Tate Institute by ReSpace Projects\, the production draws powerful parallels between the revival of a historic community building and the reclaiming of forgotten histories. Staged just yards from where the Silvertown Strike took place\, the play brings Newham’s industrial past vividly into the present. \nCreated by playwright James Kenworth\, the Newham Plays celebrate the borough’s rich heritage through site-responsive productions that combine professional artists with local communities. \nSince 2012\, the series has explored the lives of figures including Charlie Chaplin\, Mahatma Gandhi\, Keir Hardie\, Alice in Wonderland\, Elizabeth Fry and Madge Gill\, earning praise for its imaginative storytelling\, locally-led new writing and innovative use of historic spaces. \nFollowing the 7.30pm on Wednesday 26 August 2026\, I’ll talk to Three Ghosts of Silvertown‘s writer James Kenworth and the company about this latest instalment of the acclaimed Newham Plays. SUMMARY:Night City
DESCRIPTION:Night City\, Max Wilkinson’s electric and epic modern drama about three underpaid and overworked Londoners\, premieres at Southwark Playhouse this autumn.  \nMeet Jack\, Tamara and Riva. Three ordinary people. All undervalued\, underpaid and overworked. Welcome to London. \nSpanning three intersecting stories\, Night City\, written by Max Wilkinson and directed by Ebenezer Bamgboye\, is an epic modern drama with sharp\, dark humour\, incorporating movement and an electric soundtrack to explore the highs and lows of London’s under-recognised gig workers. \nRide-share driver Jack Stielitz tears through the city each night\, fuelled by anything that will keep him going as the ‘GoGo cars’ algorithm pumps him full of cash and customer ratings. That is\, until he meets Riva and the app takes a sinister turn\, leaving his body broken on Old Kent Road. \nOn the brink of eviction\, home care worker Tamara Bishop loves her many patients but struggles to juggle all their needs. When she is asked to care for elderly heiress Gigi Mitchum\, an unlikely friendship forms\, but Tamara’s morality is thrown into question. \nJust arrived in London\, young and naive waitress Riva Singh finds the city of dreams isn’t all she had hoped for. Desperate to make it as a writer\, now is her chance to tell us her story. The story of Night City. \nFollowing the 7.30pm on Thursday 17 September 2026\, I’ll talk to Night City‘s cast and creatives about the play’s development and themes. Any questions? SUMMARY:Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky\, Patrick Hamilton’s love letter to 1920s Jazz Age London\, finally comes to the stage care of Troupe Theatre\, the company renowned for its rediscovery of lost classics.   \n“But I want you – I must have you” \nLondon\, 1929. In the seedy Midnight Bell pub\, barman Bob dreams of becoming a writer\, while barmaid Ella dreams of being with Bob. When Bob becomes obsessed with alluring prostitute Jenny Maple\, he fritters his life’s savings on trying to rescue her. But there is more to the intriguing Jenny than meets the eye… \nAdapted from the classic novel by Patrick Hamilton\, famed author of Gaslight\, Rope and Hangover Square\, Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky is an epic tale of three lonely Londoners looking for connection in the sprawling streets of the metropolis. \nBoth darkly humorous and devastating\, it is a love letter to 1920s Jazz Age London in all its grimy glory. An acclaimed television adaptation was broadcast on BBC Four in 2005\, starring Sally Hawkins. \nThis world premiere of Simon Reade’s sharp new stage play adaptation is directed by Off West End Award winner Matthew Iliffe (Bacon) and features an ensemble cast in a stylish period production from Troupe Theatre\, the producer of Noël Coward’s The Rat Trap and John Galsworthy’s The Forsyte Saga Parts 1 and 2 (Royal Shakespeare Company/Park Theatre). \nFollowing the 7pm on Friday 18 September 2026\, I’ll talk to Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky‘s director and cast about Patrick Hamilton’s legacy and bringing this lost classic to the stage. Any questions? Join us! \nBook tickets for Twenty Thousand Streets + post-show Q&A
