The Psychiatrist\, written by and co-starring Julian Bird based on personal experience\, premieres at London’s White Bear Theatre.  \nAfter working as a psychiatrist and physician for 40 years\, Julian Bird started acting in his sixties. He now takes the title role in his self-penned new two-hander The Psychiatrist. \nThe play is based on real events and portrays a psychiatrist’s struggle with poor resources\, whilst trying to achieve a better life for his patients. Troubling events and losses in the psychiatrist’s personal life lead him to seek help from a psychotherapist while he continues his work. \nIn alternating scenes\, he is shown as a patient and as a therapist. \nFollowing his career in psychiatry\, Bird trained as an actor at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. His TV credits include East Enders and The Tudors for the BBC. He received critical acclaim for his role as Sigmund Freud in Freud’s Last Session at the King’s Head in 2022. \nBird commented: \n“From my own experience I am well aware that at times of stress the mental health of psychiatrists can be a critical factor in the treatment of their patients. Audiences will get a realistic feel for the tensions\, frustrations and dangers of working with inadequate resources and a fascinating insight into the mental health problems of a psychiatrist.” \nKenneth Michaels directs Bird and co-star Stephanie Okoye. DESCRIPTION:Kunstler\, Jeffrey Sweet’s critically acclaimed US play about legal civil rights hero William Kunstler\, gets its long-awaited European premiere at London’s White Bear Theatre\, with original star Jeff McCarthy reprising his title role. \n“At a time when America is short of heroes\, I decided to write about one of my personal heroes\, the radical lawyer William Kunstler. He engaged many of the most controversial issues of the time\, issues that are certainly still challenging us today” – playwright Jeffrey Sweet \nFamous for defending the Chicago Seven\, William Kunstler (1919-1995) was America’s leading radical lawyer and a Civil Rights activist with an outsize personality and a tremendous appetite for life. Jeffrey Sweet’s play introduces the legendary legal renegade to European audiences. \nIn this two-hander drama\, tensions flare when Kunstler arrives on a college campus to give a seminar. The brilliant young law student assigned to introduce him objects to his appearance and is determined to confront him. Has Kunstler finally met his match? \nKunstler vividly brings to life the Chicago Seven conspiracy trial and the Central Park Five\, using the lawyer’s own memoirs to get a sense of his thought process\, philosophy and language. Sweet also draws on scenes from public record\, including the trial in Chicago and Kunstler’s speeches. DESCRIPTION:After the inaugural production of Exhibitionists in January\, I return to the new King’s Head Theatre in February for another new play\, Benjamin Britten-inspired Turning the Screw\, which transfers after its successful premiere at New Wimbledon Theatre Studio.  \nIt’s 1954 and Benjamin Britten is working on a new opera about purity and innocence. He’s in an illegal gay relationship with Peter Pears and they can’t draw attention to themselves. \nThe star of the opera\, a choirboy named David Hemmings\, is coming to stay with them and the people around Britten are concerned – but who’s going to say “No!” to him…? Someone’s going to get hurt. \nThis is a new play about love\, music and power. \nWritten by Kevin Kelly\, Turning the Screw tells the story of the famed composer Benjamin Britten\, set during the pink panic in the 1950s as he grapples with his homosexuality while composing The Turn of the Screw. \nGary Tushaw plays Benjamin Britten in a cast that also features Liam Watson as Hemmings\, Simon Willmont as Pears\, Jo Wickham\, Jonathan Clarkson\, and Sam McHale. Out of the box pour the objects\, people\, wrongs\, jokes\, mistakes\, laughter and regrets that make up a life. \nOver the next 70 minutes\, he is swept up by moments in the journey that brought him here\, to this great stage of fools: the loss of three daughters\, the loss of his knights\, the loss of his fool\, the loss of his wits. Oh\, and the storm. Don’t forget the storm. When The Rain Came… \nUsing only Shakespeare’s words\, Lear’s Shadow is an inventive and engaging reflection on Shakespeare’s great domestic tragedy\, devised and performed by Colin Hurley. \nAn actor for 40 years\, Hurley is a former member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre and played in 20 productions at Shakespeare’s Globe (including playing Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night at The Globe\, in the West End and on Broadway).
