Grieving the loss of his epileptic daughter\, he is determined to transfer her consciousness into a new body. In his quest\, he recreates his soulmate Freya\, blending her DNA with AI to form “Mother.” \nBut as Dr Crete focuses on his daughter’s legacy\, he remains unaware that both Mother and the droid CAI harbor a hidden agenda. DESCRIPTION:Before Lenny Henry and Gary Wilmot\, there was Charlie Williams. Eh Up\, Me Old Flowers\, Chris England’s acclaimed play about the pioneering black comedian\, gets its London premiere at the White Bear Theatre after the Edinburgh Fringe.  \nIn the 1970s the biggest comedy show on television was ITV’s The Comedians. It took bow-tie comics from the Northern club circuit\, put them on the screen for the very first time\, and made them into overnight sensations. And the breakout star\, the one who shone brightest of all\, was Charlie Williams. \nCharlie was the first black comedian to become a household name. With his toothy grin\, his infectious laugh\, and his incongruous thick South Yorkshire accent – ‘Tha’s right\, love\, right accent\, wrong colour!’ – he paved the way for many who followed in his footsteps\, such as Lenny Henry and Gary Wilmot. \nIt wasn’t only as an entertainer that Charlie was a pioneer who broke down barriers. He was one of the very few black professional footballers in the 1950s\, playing for Doncaster Rovers. He was the only black lad at his school near Barnsley\, and the only black lad down the mine when he left. \nPerhaps his material would nowadays be considered questionable. But perhaps if you had lived his extraordinary life in a white man’s world – coal miner\, footballer\, cabaret singer\, comedian – you’d have done the same. DESCRIPTION:Who does a psychiatrist turn to when he needs help himself? The Psychiatrist\, written by and co-starring Julian Bird based on personal experience\, premieres at London’s White Bear Theatre.  \nAfter working as a psychiatrist and physician for 40 years\, Julian Bird started acting in his sixties. He now takes the title role in his self-penned new two-hander The Psychiatrist. \nThe play is based on real events and portrays a psychiatrist’s struggle with poor resources\, whilst trying to achieve a better life for his patients. Troubling events and losses in the psychiatrist’s personal life lead him to seek help from a psychotherapist while he continues his work. \nIn alternating scenes\, he is shown as a patient and as a therapist. \nFollowing his career in psychiatry\, Bird trained as an actor at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. His TV credits include East Enders and The Tudors for the BBC. He received critical acclaim for his role as Sigmund Freud in Freud’s Last Session at the King’s Head in 2022. \nBird commented: \n“From my own experience I am well aware that at times of stress the mental health of psychiatrists can be a critical factor in the treatment of their patients. Audiences will get a realistic feel for the tensions\, frustrations and dangers of working with inadequate resources and a fascinating insight into the mental health problems of a psychiatrist.” \nKenneth Michaels directs Bird and co-star Stephanie Okoye.
