DESCRIPTION:After One Who Wants to Cross at the Finborough in February\, I’m thrilled to chair the post-show talk for another new play care of Clarisse Makundul Productions\, Makundul’s own Under the Kundè Tree at Southwark Playhouse Borough. \nUnder the Kundè Tree is set in the 1950s during the secret Cameroonian war of independence. It follows Sara\, a young woman\, struggling to strike a balance between her heart’s desire and the pressure to fulfil traditional familial obligations. \nTackling difficult issues of colonialism\, identity and freedom\, this story explores themes of contemporary relevance\, whilst reading an overlooked and often unknown period of history. DESCRIPTION:After a spine-chilling post-show talk for ghost story When Darkness Falls last year\, I’m looking forward to reuniting with writer Paul Morrissey at London’s Park Theatre for his latest new thriller\, Wickies. \nWickie: n. (job-specific jargon) A lighthouse keeper\, whose responsibilities typically included the tending and trimming of wicks for the light. \nOn 26 December 1900\, a small ship was making its way to the Flannan Islands in the remote Outer Hebrides. \nIts destination was the lighthouse at Eilean Mor\, a remote island that (apart from its lighthouse keepers) was completely uninhabited. When the ship arrived on the island\, the lighthouse was unlocked and two of three oil-skinned coats belonging to the men were missing. \nThe fire was out – and had been for some days – the kitchen area had half-eaten food\, the chairs were overturned\, and the clock had stopped. More importantly\, the lighthouse lamp was out. The three men had vanished. \nWickies is based on the true story of James Ducat\, Thomas Marshall and Donald MacArthur: a supernatural thriller that seeks to unravel the enduring mystery of the Vanishing Men of Eilean Mor. DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed one-woman show Empty in Angel\, which hilariously dissects the perils of the gig economy\, concludes its autumn London tour at the Old Red Lion Theatre in November. \nEmpty in Angel tells the story of a bicycle courier\, her community\, and their amazing fight for rights in the gig economy… partly in rhyming couplets. Their simple demands for fairness\, dignity and security end in a historic legal battle. \nJoin in the struggles\, laughs and the protest – help us fight for the right to be human! \nBased on actual events\, Empty in Angel was a sell-out success at south London’s White Bear Theatre in 2019 and a finalist in two categories of the Standing Ovation Awards 2020 (New Play Raising Awareness and Innovative Play). \nDarcy Willison reprises her White Bear performance in Empty in Angel‘s current tour\, which also includes London’s Etcetera\, Hen & Chickens and Bloomsbury Theatres. Katherine Reilly directs. \nLaw Society Policy Adviser James Woolf was inspired to write Empty in Angel after attending a presentation on the gig economy. The drama was written with the full knowledge\, approval and cooperation of the Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB)\, the trade union that supported the courier through the court case which forms the foundation for this play.
