DESCRIPTION:Wildly funny new musical The Pleasure Garden takes a peek through the bushes to discover the bawdy history of Vauxhall’s history as a hedonistic playground. It premieres at Vauxhall’s own Above the Stag Theatre\, on the edge of the park where the story is set. \nFor two centuries\, the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens in south London drew enormous crowds for its circus acts\, balloon rides\, orchestral concerts and spectacular fireworks. For those in the know\, however\, the darker paths\, wooded corners and intimate arbours were used for more illicit and illegal entertainments. \nIn The Pleasure Garden\, it’s 1850 and the gardens are now in their dying days. Yet still the faithful come… \nTom Restless\, a handsome young gardener\, is torn between the affections of a hopelessly romantic shipping clerk and a sexually voracious aristocratic couple. With the gardens closing and his livelihood under threat\, will Tom choose a bohemian life with Ralph; employment with the unorthodox Lord and Lady Lovelock; or answer the drumbeat of a looming overseas war? \nThe Pleasure Garden is written by Glenn Chandler\, whose many hit award-winning plays include\, most recently\, Kids Play and The Good Scout\, for which I also chaired post-show talks for their London runs at Above the Stag. I think a million dollars is yours” \nAtlantic City. 1988: Jonny and Rebecca are very much in love and very much in debt. He’s a struggling singer-songwriter (who spends most of his time playing backup for Annie\, a singer at the Oasis Casino Hotel Resort) she works part-time at the casino and for a local charity. They struggle to make ends meet but they’re happy and that’s enough. Or is it? \nWhen wealthy stranger Larry Harris arrives in town and offers Rebecca a million dollars to spend a night with him\, will the lure of money outweigh the promise of fidelity? Will Rebecca accept Larry’s indecent proposal? Will her marriage survive if she doesn’t? Will Jonny stick around if she does? \nBased on Jack Engelhard’s 1988 novel\, which sparked a worldwide debate when it was made into the hit 1993 film starring Robert Redford\, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson\, Indecent Proposal is a chamber musical with a dynamic and fast-paced narrative and a moving and exciting score. \nWhile staying true to book’s setting of Atlantic City in the 1980s\, it reimagines the work through the lens of the current\, post #MeToo social and political climate\, allowing audiences to consider what they would do in a similar situation\, while they watch this couple grapple with the fallout from a stranger’s proposition. \nThis musical brings a story to the stage that\, over 30 years after the book was published\, is still painfully relevant. But when longstanding owner Val suddenly dies\, they have to deal with her savvy\, streetwise\, tourism guru of a niece; feisty new graduate Roxy\, who takes over the running of the firm. \nSet before\, during and after the General Election on 12 December 2019\, Angels of the North is a hilarious and touching insight into what it means to the North now the red wall has fallen\, seen through the eyes of a struggling taxi firm at the end of the line. Dennis and Mick might be the worst taxi drivers on the planet\, but they know what it takes to survive. Roxy might be a thorn in their side\, but she may well just be an angel in disguise. \n\nAuthor John Godber plays Dennis\, and is joined on stage by his former student Adrian Hood and his daughter Martha Godber\, who recently graduated from LIPA. Mr Simon’s manipulative behaviour\, however\, soon causes Bill to realise that the invitation was not as innocent as he’d hoped. Bill attempts to make a polite departure\, but unfortunately\, events take a disastrous turn… \nBill\, now terrified\, solicits the help of his childhood friend\, who he hasn’t seen since they awkwardly got together some months ago. DESCRIPTION:As part of the industry-invite\, opening night performance of In Search of a White Identity\, the first new play developed and produced in association with The Actors Centre\, I’ll chair a discussion about both the play and the theatre’s future plans. \nMickey\, Patrick and Mo are three men of different cultures who are forced to face each other and their divergent political beliefs head-on when they find themselves held in a police cell. Patrick and Mickey grew up together\, so why have they been arrested on opposing sides of an English Defence League march? And why have they been put in a cell with Muslim Mo? \nIn Search of a White Identity is an urgent piece of new writing explores race\, class and masculinity through the prism of detainment. The premiere production is directed by Victoria Evaristo and stars author Cliffordkuju Henry as Patrick alongside Drew Edwards as Mickey and Ali Zaidi as Mo. \nWriter-performer Cliffordkuju Henry said: \n“This project for me is about having a dialogue around working-class relationships\, and illuminating the obstacles that get in the way of us relating to each other.” \nThe Actors Centre recently announced that its John Thaw Studio will become a home for new writing\, offering year-round development opportunities for artists\, opening doors for creativity and the future of important works and leading to possible runs at the Centre’s Tristan Bates Theatre. Over the course of one night\, two very different people learn what it truly means to be touched by the magic of hope. A nuanced and compassionate piece\, it finds hope in the bleakest of circumstances. \nGabriel Vick and Susan Aderin star as Francis and Fifi in this poetic and uplifting examination of how race and gender intersect with issues of mental health. \nThe piece is partly inspired by characters created by service users and clinicians in a six-week theatre engagement programme that Playing ON ran with East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) and Theatre Royal Stratford East\, as well as several interviews with members of the Ghanaian community. Celebrated for its original score including the Academy Award-winning song Falling Slowly\, Once is a spell-binding and uplifting story of hopes and dreams. \nThe cast is led by Daniel Healy as Guy and Emma Lucia as Girl\, who return to the roles after receiving acclaim in this production’s 2018 premiere at the New Wolsey Theatre\, Ipswich and Queen’s Theatre\, Hornchurch. \n \nHealy is a singer-songwriter\, musician and actor\, who has co-written songs for multi-platinum artist Ronan Keating including the single Breathe\, which topped the BBC Radio 2 Playlist. His theatre credits include Backbeat and Once\, both in the West End. Emma Lucia made her professional debut as Marilyn and understudying Carole King in the UK Tour of Beautiful\, before taking on the role of Girl in Once. \nThe stage version of Once premiered at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2011 before transferring to Broadway in 2012. For her\, conversations are a battleground and words are tools for manipulation. \nEleanor’s stance on the US-UK led 2003 invasion to oust Saddam Hussein persuades one young reader\, Mark\, to enlist. When Mark’s mother seeks out the journalist who convinced her son to die for his country\, sparks fly and violent confrontations ensue. Eleanor is faced with a family in mourning and is asked to answer for it. \nThis hard-hitting new play interrogates the power and danger of language. In our world of clickbait and instantaneous reaction on social media\, people formulate entire beliefs based on 240 characters and the headlines of pieces they’ve barely read.
